Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a permanent, full-time Laboratory Technical Officer - Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, and Immunology to join Te Kura Mātauranga Koiora - School of Biological Sciences. 

In this position, you will prepare undergraduate teaching laboratories and support various initiatives within the School. You will be based in our modern Te Toki A Rata building, completed in 2018, and collaborate with a team of six other teaching technicians and the broader technical team. 

 Key responsibilities: 

  • Prepare and set up laboratory classes for assigned sessions, ensuring proper maintenance and support. 
  • Foster strong relationships with academic and technical staff to facilitate the smooth operation of teaching laboratories. 
  • Operate teaching-related instruments as needed. 
  • Collect, prepare, and culture biological specimens (on rare occasions, may require weekend or after-hours attendance with flexible Time in Lieu by arrangement).
  • Ensure that academic program requirements are met while adhering to health and safety and other legislative standards.
  • Support the school in chemical inventory management, and health and safety compliance monitoring as necessary. 
  • Contribute to the development of standard operating procedures (SOPs) and support process improvement initiatives. 
  • Opportunity to assist with summer research activities during trimester breaks.
