Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a permanent, full-time Pūkenga - Lecturer in Sociology. The successful applicant would ideally commence work in February 2025.

Key responsibilities: 

  • Contributing to introductory and upper-level courses across contemporary themes in Sociology and Social Policy. There is also potential to contribute to the Gender and Sexuality Studies minor.
  • Developing new curricula building on the successful applicant’s expertise.
  • Supervising MA and PhD research on a broad range of topics in Sociology and Social Policy.
  • Demonstrating excellence in teaching, a developing research profile, and commitment to public engagement.
  • Contribute to achieving equity through a commitment to te Tiriti o Waitangi and applying Mātauranga Māori to learning and research.

Ō pūmanawa - About you

You will be a dynamic scholar-teacher who will complement the current staff’s research expertise. Area of research specialisation is open, however expanding the expertise within the programme is a priority. We have a particular interest in the areas of Māori, Pacific, and Indigenous studies/sociology.

Key requirements: 

  • A PhD (or nearly completed) in Sociology or related disciplines such as (but not limited to) Māori studies, Pacific studies, Indigenous studies or Gender, Sexuality, and Queer studies.
  • Demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching related to Sociology and/or Social Policy.
  • A developing research profile of emerging international standing.
  • Commitment to public engagement.
