Our client an established Hospital in North Dublin wishes to recruit a Chief Medical Scientist Haematology. To manage the provision of a Quality Diagnostic Haematology and Coagulation Service in co-operation with the Laboratory Manager, Clinical Director of Pathology, Consultant Haematologist, Medical Scientists, and laboratory staff.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
• Maintaining throughout the hospital an awareness of the primacy of patient in relation to all hospital activities and maintain a clear understanding of the importance of providing a quality and safe service to all patients.
• Participating with the Laboratory Manager, and Consultant Haematologist in identifying and implementing operational processes in Haematology to the standards of ‘best practice’ to optimise use of resources.
• Participating in future development of the Laboratory Service that supports the clinical needs of the patients and is consistent with the mission, vision, values, and strategic plan of the Hospital.
• Leading and training a team of skilled staff and creating and promoting healthy working relationships.
• Promote good communication within the haematology department through departmental meetings and other means.
• Lead and co-ordinate scientific staff and support staff within their department.
• Ensure that the team is allocated according to their ability, education, training, and patient needs and apply maximum delegation compatible with safe work practice.
• Participating in developing and leading the introduction of new ideas and methods according to Hospital policy.
• Participate in Laboratory, Hospital and/or external committees as required.
• Ensuring appropriate compliance with International and National guidelines and standards for the provision of Laboratory Services and actively participate in internal and external quality control and quality assurance.
In co-operation with the Laboratory Manager, Clinical Director of Pathology, Consultant Haematologist, and with the support from the Finance Department participate in:
Prepare budget estimates including a planned programme for replacing capital equipment.
• Manage the most effective use of available resources in their laboratory department.
• Participating, as required, with the Laboratory Manager, Clinical Director of Pathology and Consultant Haematologist in costing methods for their laboratory service to other Hospital Departments.
• Provide statistical and management information as requested by the Laboratory Manager, Clinical Director of Pathology or Consultant Haematologist in a timely manner or other members of Hospital Management.
Essential experience
* Possess at least seven years full time clinical experience (or an aggregate of seven years full time clinical experience) as a medical scientist in a clinical diagnostic laboratory since qualifying as a medical scientist, two years of which were spent in a promotional post.
Essential Skills
* The Chief Medical Scientist will be expected to show initiative and self-organisation in the carrying out of the duties and responsibilities of the position. They must be able to work with and ensure a high level of cooperation, communication and teamwork with patients, technical personnel, medical and administrative staff and with equipment manufacturers and service providers.
Essential Qualifications
Candidates for appointment must Possess:
Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Medical Science or
Bachelor of Science (Honours) Biomedical Science
