Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a permanent, full-time Pūkenga - Lecturer in Māori Designed Environments. While the primary teaching duty associated with this role will be serving as a Pūkenga - Lecturer in the Māori and Designed Environments specialization of the Bachelor of Architectural Studies, the role will also encompass teaching Mātauranga Māori in key courses across other majors offered by the School of Architecture and in Postgraduate research that engages with Mātauranga Māori.

We are a multidisciplinary Te Kura Waihanga - School of Architecture, with programmes from Urban and Regional Planning, Landscape Architecture, Interior Architecture, Construction Law, and Building Science. Our staff are renowned for excellent research, teaching and industry engagement and our graduates are highly attractive to both local and international employers. 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Undertake academically rigorous and inspiring teaching in the Māori Designed Environments specialisation and other relevant undergraduate and post graduate courses. 
  • Attracting internal and external research funding through the development of research projects in the disciplines taught in our school. 
  • Supervision of Masters’ and PhD students especially those whose research engages Mātauranga Māori. 
  • Contributing to the collegial and administrative development of the programme, school, faculty, and university in service roles. 

Ō pūmanawa - About you

You are passionate about teaching a diverse range of students and appreciate the importance of Ako (reciprocal teaching and learning) to this environment. You will be familiar with contemporary discourse and demands in the field of architecture and with Te Aranga Māori design principles. A specialisation and evidence of success in one or more of the following would be helpful:

  • Architecture.
  • Urban design. 
  • Regenerative architecture.
  • Landscape architecture.
  • Interior architecture.
  • Building Science.

An appreciation for both the fundamental and advanced requirements of Māori designed environments as part of the discipline of architecture will help you thrive in this role, as well as an appreciation of industry connections and opportunities to collaborate and enhance student successes and experiences. You will engage with allied majors, in particular Architecture, Building Science, Interior Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Planning and Construction Law and be encouraged to share and scaffold knowledge across the other relevant majors in the Te Kura Waihanga - School of Architecture. A collaborative and open approach to teaching and learning will give you opportunities of growth and diversity. You will also encourage a collaborative and supportive environment. 

Key Requirements:

  • Relevant qualifications or industry experience commensurate with the seniority of this role or a completed PhD in a relevant field. 
  • An established track record in research publication and/or creative work. 
  • Demonstrated evidence of a high standard of teaching in a relevant field at tertiary level or relevant industry experience. 
  • Ability to work with students and staff from a diverse range of backgrounds.
