Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a Coastal Ecology Technical Officer on a permanent, full-time basis. This role will be responsible for day-to-day operations at Te Toka Tū Moana - Victoria University Coastal Ecology Lab (VUCEL) located near Island Bay as well as acting as the University’s Dive Safety Officer supporting scientific diving programmes for teaching and research. This position will also assist with boat-based activities, collections and maintenance of biological specimens, and management of laboratory facilities and VUCEL’s seawater system. This role involves roughly 90% residency/support at VUCEL and 10% at Kelburn Campus.

You will be a motivated, technically competent individual who works well in a team and on your own. This position works closely with students, academics, and professional staff. You will have a positive can-do attitude and be comfortable and happy to pivot to the variety of needs of the VUCEL.

Key Requirements:

  • Minimum of BSc in biological sciences or related field.
  • Qualified as a Scuba Diving Instructor, with extensive dive experience, including cold water.
  • Holder of a current New Zealand Certificate of Competence for occupational SCUBA diving (scientific).
  • Medical clearance to undertake occupational diving.
  • Strong health and safety principles.
  • Enthusiasm, professionalism, and commitment to educational objectives.
  • Proven experience supporting the operation of research and/or teaching laboratories in an education environment.
  • Field work and outdoor experience.
  • Excellent organisational skills including proven history of organising fieldwork logistics.
  • Computing skills, including competence in Microsoft Office and familiarity with database management systems.
  • Proven leadership capability in a variety of fieldwork situations.
  • Proven ability and experience working as part of a larger technical team.
  • Full NZ driver's licence.
  • Flexibility to work over summer peak fieldwork season.

Desirable:

  • Strong practical skills/knowledge (e.g., DIY, electrical, trade).
  • Experience towing boats up to 7.5 meters.
