Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role
Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a pool of casual, part-time, Academic Inclusion Assistants to join the Te Amaru-Disability Services team. The role of Academic Inclusion Assistant is to assist students with disabilities to participate fully in the academic environment and to produce work that is reflective of their academic ability.
The Academic Inclusion Assistant duties may include: note-taking, captioning, assessment assistance, academic assistance and electronic transcription.
Students with disabilities utilise these services if the combined impact of their disability and the nature of the course they are studying create any needs that technology can’t address. The Academic Inclusion Assistant will work with the Academic Inclusion Coordinator and the student to tailor support to meet the student’s needs.
Ō pūmanawa - About you
We are currently recruiting Academic Inclusion Assistants to support Te Herenga Waka students with disabilities in their courses in 2023.
This role is ideal for undergraduate or post graduate students who have 5-10 hours per week during trimester, including assessment periods. The pay rate is $24 per hour, starting as soon as possible.
Essential skills & responsibilities:
- Typing speed – at least 70 words per minute (to be assessed through completion of an audio typing test).
- Clear and comprehensive note-taking skills.
- Excellent listening skills.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Strong English language speaker with clear pronunciation and reading skills.
- Have a laptop and access to a good Wi-Fi connection.
- Ability to problem-solve minor technology issues.
- Ability to remain calm and provide an effective service under sometimes challenging conditions.
- Be prepared to work at Pipitea and Kelburn campuses, as required.
- Be prepared to wear a medical mask when working at Te Amaru-Disability Services premises, and in other University campus locations where their work necessitates closely working with disabled students.
Desirable skills & responsibilities:
- Previous experience as a note-taker or captioner e.g. Te Amaru—Disability Services Volunteer Notetaker.
- Knowledge of Te Reo Māori.
- Experience of disability.
