Principal Firmware Engineer / Edinburgh/ £70 per hour PAYE

Our client's Electronics Function in Edinburgh requires a Senior/Principal Firmware (FPGA) Engineer to create and develop firmware for leading edge airborne applications. You would be responsible for the design and development of Firmware designs using VHDL, for verifying designs using either VHDL or SystemVerilog and working to a structured firmware design process.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop innovative VHDL-based FPGA firmware for advanced airborne applications.
  • Verify designs using VHDL or SystemVerilog.
  • Work with current FPGA technologies from Xilinx, Altera, or Microsemi.
  • Utilise Model Driven Engineering tools such as MATLAB and Simulink.
  • Design and integrate high-speed interfaces including PCIe, DDR3, and Ethernet.
  • Follow a structured firmware design process, such as RTCA DO-254.
  • Analyse system-level documents to derive detailed firmware requirements.
  • Specify complex timing and area constraints for efficient FPGA place and route.
  • Debug firmware designs and support system-level verification and integration.
  • Communicate effectively and flexibly within the team.

Skills, Qualifications & Knowledge Required:

  • Degree in Electronics and Electrical Engineering, ideally specialising in FPGA/Digital techniques.
  • Experience in creating VHDL-based FPGA designs.
  • Proficiency in advanced verification techniques using VHDL or SystemVerilog/UVM.
  • Familiarity with FPGA technologies and tools from Xilinx, Intel (Altera), or Microsemi (Actel).
  • Experience with high-speed interfaces such as PCIe, Ethernet, JESDC.
  • Knowledge of Model Based Engineering using MATLAB and Simulink.
  • Methodical approach to the full firmware design lifecycle, ideally working to a structured process like RTCA DO-254.
