The Crude Oil Market Analyst role primarily focuses on providing crucial support to traders in their decision-making processes, with a specific emphasis on the crude oil market. The responsibilities encompass conducting in-depth market research, analysis, and reporting related to crude oil. This involves a comprehensive examination of pricing dynamics, demand-supply balances, identifying the underlying factors influencing these variables, and the preparation of decision-support reports. Visualizing data graphically through various visualization tools is also part of the job.

Responsibilities

In the day-to-day tasks, the Crude Oil Market Analyst is expected to efficiently manage and organize detailed price and fundamental data. This includes extracting pertinent information and conveying its significant implications to traders. The analyst also plays a crucial role in ensuring the regular ingestion of internally generated balance data and curated fundamentals data from external sources into internal SQL databases. Forecasting crude oil movements, producing regular reports, offering insights on forward product cracks and refining margins, and developing and maintaining tools, dashboards, and reports for the trading group are essential components of the job. Additionally, the analyst must be prepared to provide ad-hoc fundamental oil market analyses promptly, including event analytics. Communicating comprehensive insights into the relationships between crude and refined product market prices and fundamentals is another significant aspect of the role.

Requirements

To qualify for this position, candidates are required to have a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Economics, or a related discipline. Furthermore, a minimum of five years of experience in a similar role, preferably within a physical oil trading business, is necessary. A detailed understanding of the Asian crude oil market is crucial, along with a solid background in building supply-demand balance models for crude oil in the Asian context. Familiarity with Asian refinery configurations and product yields is also expected. Strong analytical skills are a must, as the role involves handling and evaluating large amounts of data. Effective written and verbal communication skills in both English and Mandarin are essential, including the ability to produce technical documents. Proficiency in pricing methodologies and practices, along with the capability to integrate industry knowledge with data analysis to provide actionable insights, is highly valued. The role also requires good to advanced IT skills, including programming (Python) and data visualization (Tableau), in addition to proficiency in standard applications (MS Office, Excel), databases, and information systems (VBA, SQL). Experience with Reuters/Bloomberg is considered a plus. Lastly, attention to detail and rigor are essential attributes for success in this role.
