Legal Paralegal (Royal College of Nursing) (BBBH34094) Sunderland, England

Salary: GBP30000 - GBP33000 per annum
The Royal College of Nursing is seeking an experienced Paralegal for one of its offices in Leeds, Sunderland or Bolton. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with the right skills to develop their career within a professional and nurturing environment. The post holder will provide a high standard of support for the Legal Service Directorate. It will be a requirement that discretion and confidentiality is maintained at all times and also to assist in maintaining the effective running of the legal office.

Duties and Responsibilities:

* Good working knowledge of Microsoft office applications (including Word, Outlook and Excel) and databases
* To support with the representation and defence of RCN members in respect of regulatory proceedings in response to charges of alleged professional conduct brought by, and before, the Nursing and Midwifery Council (“NMC”)
* To support with the representation and defence of RCN members in respect of allegations brought by and certificates administered by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS)
* To support with the representation and defence of RCN member at Inquests
* Taking, drafting and proof-reading witness statements
* Taking notes in conference and at hearings before regulatory and other tribunals
* Preparing bundles of documents for hearings
* Managing, under supervision, case files which will consist of Substantive Order Review cases and other case files considered appropriate for the experience of the postholder
* Assisting Senior Legal Officers and Legal Officers prepare cases for interim order hearings and interim order review hearings
* Undertaking legal research
* Attending on members and witnesses at all stages of the proceedings
* Preparing legal documents, including instructions and briefs to barristers
* Filing documents with relevant tribunals or authorities
* Attending hearings and supporting barristers and solicitors representing the member, when considered appropriate in the circumstances of the case
* To plan and deliver your work in accordance with the deadlines imposed by the litigation timetables, and the requirements of the supervising lawyer, seeking assistance when needed
* To assist members of staff across the Directorate with discrete delegated tasks
* Any other duties as may be required from time to time together with occasional travel

Essential Skills:

* Law Degree or equivalent legal experience
* Knowledge and or background of a claimant, trade union, healthcare or regulatory organisation
* Experience of supporting, developing and implementing systems and new ways of working
* Experience of working within a team, and ensuring that all internal operating protocols and customer service standards are met
* Experience of working within a customer service environment
* Experience of gathering information and presenting it in an understandable format
* Experience of building strong and successful relationships with both internal and external stakeholders
* Ability to assist Senior Legal Officers and Legal Officers with advising and representing members on all aspects of regulatory law
* Excellent communication, including written and presentation skills
* Ability to manage competing demands whilst maintaining a calm, measured & professional service
* Excellent time management skills, with the ability to work to deadlines whilst maintaining a high level of attention to detail
* Ability to draft correspondence, selecting and interpreting information
* Ability to negotiate with good influencing skills
* Ability to use Microsoft Office Packages including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email, internet and diary software to an intermediate level
* Ability to work independently and collaboratively with colleagues to ensure that deadlines are met
* Ability to multitask and follow instructions and directions accordingly
